Re: Morvern Mclea/Maconlea Livingstone Tenants 1716 and 1779

Hi Donald

I will actually be staying at Benderloch for the next couple of weeks. I believe there are still Livingston(e)s living there. I'll try to find out details of that branch of the family.

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi Donald

I have emailed the Luing History Group tonight asking for information on the documents they hold and if I can actually order copies before I arrive there next week or will I be required to copy the relevant information myself. Hope it is the former! Will let you know.

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi John Thanks for looking for me but my Neil's father was Duncan. Because this is my direct line I worked it backwards using original records so I am certain that what I have is accurate. I suspect Duncan's birth about 1845 (my Gt Grandfather) was not registered as his father's birth had not been r...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi Sandra Yes Donald and Jean got married in Glasgow. Their first child, John, was born in Lochwinnoch. We can't tell if that is where Donald lived or not because it wasn't unusual for the girl to go back to her mother for the first birth. Having said that Neil appeared to have lived in the Greenock...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi Sandra I know it'll take you a while to absorb all the information I sent you. If you then want to come back to me with any questions I'll be happy to help. When you mention Jane's grandfather Donald and his brother Neil (my 2 x Gt Grandfather) moving to the wider Glasgow area I wasn't aware of t...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi John I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the case that they had named another son after his deceased brother. I have come across this several times. The naming pattern was strong around this time so the first Duncan would probably have been named after one of his grandfathers or father who w...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi Donald, Correction to last night's message. I plead tiredness or senior moment! I was looking through all my old maps when I realised the road I had described leading to Ardmaddy Castle was not in fact the one leading to the Cuan Ferry. Just in case you had a look at a map and wondered what I was...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi Donald, I'm afraid I can't find Dalemnig/Dalemaig either. I've looked through all the old maps and books that I have to no avail. Given that Donald worked as a gardener at Ardmaddy I wonder if that was the name of a house or hamlet attached to Ardmaddy. Ardmaddy was a large estate down near South...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Thanks John, that's "my" Duncan - my Gt Grandfather. Born 1845 Greenock died 9 November 1904 Oban He was a shoemaker also. He married Margaret McGillivray on 4 September 1847 in Tobermory. At that time they were both living at Drumlang, nr Salen, Mull. Duncan had a brother Alexander, born ...

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar

Hi John, Thanks for that. I live in Kirkintilloch, just north of Glasgow. I have a note of this marriage and I have his usual residence at the time of his marriage as Parkhill, Kilmacolm. I think I must have got this from the original source so it may have been clearer and I have Christina's usual r...
