Donald Livingston, Cirsty Campbell and Family of Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull Argyll update

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Hi all,

I noticed a recent inquiry regarding a Livingston that settled in Grey County, Ontario. This may be information on Donald Livingston and Christy Campbell of kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll as some of their children settled in Grey County, Ontario, Canada in the 1800's. This is an update with additional info based on an earlier November 2018 Maclea Livingstone Forum posting when I was having discussions on the forum with fellow Livingstone researcher John Livingstone regarding the family of Donald Livingston and Cirsty (Christina) Campbell of Kilfinichen Parish, Argyll.

Donald Livingston and his wife Cirsty according to the 1841 Scottish Census are residing at "Ardfinaig" in Kilfinichen Parish in Ross of Mull with a daughter Catharine age 20 whom I was not aware of earlier who is also residing with them in 1851 according to the 1851 Census when they relocate sometime between the year 1841 and 1851 in Ardtun in Kilfinichen Parish where Donald and Cirsty remained at a croft there until their death.
According their death records I have seen Donald Livingston of Kilfinchen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll died in Ardtun, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull age 84 on Sept. 27, 1866 and therefore was born abt. 1782 or 1781. However the Scottish Census records in 1841, 1851 and 1861 record Donald Livingston of Kilfinichen Parish as being 65, 75 and then 85 suggesting a birth date of about 1776. Parents of Donald Livingston mentioned in the death information were Neil Livingston and Christina Campbell. (Please note that I do wonder if the name of Donald's mother "Christina Campbell might have an error recorded back in 1866 as his wife's name was also Christina Campbell.) Years ago in discussions on this forum there was pointed out to me that there was some other source stated Neil Livingston's wife Cirsty's (Christina's) family name was "Boyd". Christina known as "CIrsty" Livingstone wife of Donald Livingston died in Ardtun, Kilfinchen Parish, Ross of Mull age 82 on Sept 4, 1861. Parents of Christina "Cirsty" Livingston mentioned in the death information were Neil Campbell and Catharine Mckinnon.

Known Children of Donald Livingston and Cirsty (Christina) Campbell of Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll Scotland 2025 Updated List(Please note that according to the original parish record book of the Church of Scotland Kilfinichen Parish these records are actually "baptism records" rather than birth records as is being stated elsewhere I noticed.

In the 1841 Scottish Census John Livingston and his wife Catharine are residing with their two children Betty born in 1839 and Marrian born 1841 at the residence of John's parents Donald Livingston and Cirsty Campbelll who were in 1841 residing in Ardfinaig, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll. Also living at this residence at this time was Donald and Cirsty Livingston's youngest child Cirsty (Christina). Later in 1840's settled in Glenelg Township, Grey County, Ontario. John and Catharine's eldest child Betty was born abt. 1839 in "Ardtun" Kilfinichen Parish according to her baptism records and a second child Marrian was born in 1841 likely in Ardfinaig in Kilfinichen Parish according to her baptism records likely at the John's parent's residence there.

6. Catharine Livingston born abt. 1821 probably Assapol, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll, Scotland (She appears in the 1841 Scottish Census and later in the 1851 Census as a daughter living with her parents Donald and Cirsty Livingston in Kilfinichen Parish, Argyll. The does not seem to be any surviving baptism or birth info in the Kilfinichen Parish records for Catharine but the 1851 Census info states that she is a daughter of Donald and Cirsty. A John Livingston also age 20 in the 1841 Scottish Census living also with Donald and Cirsty in 1841 when they living at a place called Ardenfaig in Kilfinichen Parish may also be a child of Donald and Cirsty but the 1841 Census does not unfortunately indicate whether John Livingston is a son or some other relative.

7. Cirsty (Christina) Livingston b.1824 Assapol, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull Argyll, Scotland "baptized" August 26,1824 The last child born to Donald Livingston and his wife Cirsty Campbell which I found in the Kilfinichen Parish records.

Angus Livingston military Pensioner died according to an entry in the Chelsea Military Hospital records regarding the military pensioner's pension status that he died on October 30, 1847 in Paisley, Scotland possibly at this son Hugh's residence at that time in Paisley. No death record survives.

Interestingly in the 1779 Argyll Census a Neil Livingston crofter is recorded residing at Shiaba in Ross of Mull with two sons Angus and Donald which one would think would be the above mentioned Angus and Donald Livingston's father however the only problem I have with that notion is that the Donald Livingston of Assapol and Kilpatrick in Ross of Mull was if he was 84 when he died in 1866 would have been born likely in 1782 or possibly 1781 at the earliest. However the 1841,1851 and 1861 Scottish Census information indicates that Donald Livingston of Kilfinichen Parish was more likely born much earlier probably around 1776 which if so would make it more likely that he is the Donald Livingston recorded in the Argyll 1779 Cenus with his brother Angus and father Neil Livingston crofter in the year 1779 residing at Shiaba in Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull. The baptism records for Kilfinichen Parish certainly suggest that Angus Livingston was connected to the Shiaba and was at nearby Kilpatrick around the same time as Donald Livingston. It seems very likely that they were brothers and the sons of Donald LIvingston listed in Argyll 1779 Census residing at Shiaba in Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull.

From Inhabitants of the Argyll Estate 1779 Edited by Eric Creegan Scottish Record Society Volume 91 published 1963

Sheabach, Ross of Mull, Mull, Argyll (Shiaba, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull) 1779
"Neil Livingstone, Keeper age 40
Angus his son age 4
Donald his son age 2 (If actually 2 going on 3 in the year 1779 then his birth year could be 1776)
His wife, mother and daughters 4

Donald Livington's 1866 death information states that Donald Livingston of Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull, Argyll died in Ardtun, Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull age 84 on Sept. 27, 1866 and therefore was born abt. 1782 or 1781. However his Scottish Census records in 1841, 1851 and 1861 in which he is residing in Kilfinichen Parish record Donald Livingston of Kilfinichen Parish as being 65, 75 and then 85 in his last census of 1861 definitely suggesting a likely birth date of about 1776 of Donald Livingston of Kilfinichen Parish, Ross of Mull as in the above mentioned 1779 Argyll Census.
