THe 1841 Scottish Census includes McLays
Here is a sampling of some typical Scottish McLays
James McLay b.1761 Killearn Parish, Stirlingshire
William McLay b.1769

John McLay b.1781 Balfron, Stirlingshire
David McLay b. 1758 Clackmanan, Clackmananshire

Archibald McLay b.1776 Kilmarnock, Dunbartonshire

Presumingly their descendants were McClays like the ones listed in the 1600's at Killearn and Balfron in Stirlingshire. No question these McLays and the earlier McClays are same group.

23 McClays in Lanarkshire mostly in the Glasgow, Govan and Blantyre area presumingly many of these connected to the McClays in the records from the Glasgow records from the 1600's.

The search for possible descendants of 17th century Scottish McCLays has lead me to the 19th century McLays and McClays in a wide but consistent area on my atlas map from Kilmarnock and Bonhill Dunbartonshire, Paisley, Glasgow, Cumbernauld, Stirlingshire, Alloa ,Clackmanan, Clackmananshire. Think I will go south a ways and stop for pint at Falkirk and check the McLays there. I'm not really in 19th century Scotland, though if I had a time machine it would be fun no doubt to go back and visit. No I am just pretending but the point is that in this wide area in my tour of the 1841 census records I found significant pockets of McLays/McClays that are likely connected in some way in this general area. For lack of better word let us call it McClay Stirlingshire and adjacent ancestral areas. This is where I might expect to find that Craig's Scottish ancestors likely originated before they settled in Ireland in the 1800s.

It is good that Janet Parkes, Craig, and others, have all done so much work on these families. Perhaps one day we will find the Rosetta Stone for them and connect them back to Argyll or somewhere. We can hope!

I think what will be interesting is having identified a group of people belonging to this Dumbartonshire, Stirlingshire and Clackmananshire group as being connected can we then connect this group with other McLeas ie. Rothesay, Bute, Macleays of Rosshire etc. Very exciting.
