Land holding in Argyle after the post Culloden Clearances

Post by Bruce »

This is a List of the landholdings in Argyle Scotland in 1751 which post-dates Culloden and the "Clearances and confiscations" which occurred as a consequence of that event.
The values expressed are in English pounds and as an example of present day values the holding of Dugald Stewart listed at 128.pounds is 36,278.00 pounds in " today's money ". Also bear in mind that this is "Valued Rental" rather than Capital Value !

Lacking the Jpg view of this Valuation Page the 1751 List of Owners can be viewed on Page 88 of: https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/293071951.pdf

Hi Bruce,

The 1751 Argyll Landowner list interestingly includes a Duncan Mcinlea the Baron of Bachuil of Bachuil, Isle of Lismore, Argyllshire our 18th century Clan Chief and the ancestor of current Clan Chief of Highland Clan Maclea Livingstone and current Baron of Bachuil Niall Livingstone. Prior to the late 1750's and in the earlier 1700's Argyllshire record the Chief and Clan folk in Western Argyllshire would in records refer to themselves as Maconleas, Mconleas or Macleas.
