I received this message on the ARGYLL list about the new Highland Archive and Registration Centre:
it 'has a dedicated Family History Centre which deals with all aspects of
family and clan history across the Highlands of Scotland. The Highland
Family History Society is also now based there.....Many documents that were
being held at the National Archives in Edinburgh are being returned to the
Highlands, including the records from 150 local Church of Scotland
parishes.'

For those interested, it advises that the centre is in Bught Road, Inverness
IV3 5SS, telephone 01463 256444, email archives@highland.gov.uk. The
website for the Highland FHS is given as
www.highlandfamilyhistorysociety.org.

I read more info on SCT-ARGYLL-L about this:
The collections held by the Highland Archive Centre in Inverness relate mainly to the old Scottish counties of Inverness, Ross, Sutherland and Nairn; some materials relating to Perth, Caithness and Argyll are also in the archive: for example, the Old Parish Registers and the Census for Argyll are held on microfilm.

Importantly, the HAC has, in post, excellent genealogists with an encyclopaedic knowledge of all aspects of the Scottish Highlands; they offer a paid service for the general public on a daily basis, and are willing to help with enquiries relating to all the Highland counties, Argyll included. More information about HAC can be found at www.highland.gov.uk/archives

Records relating to Argyllshire are held in various places throughout Scotland, including Fort William, Glasgow and Edinburgh; some records are held privately. The policy in Scotland has been to return many collections and papers to their county of origin, hence it's important to determine exactly what is held, and where, before planning a visit.

The Lochaber Archive, in Fort William, covers the Argyll Parishes of Ardnamurchan, Ballachulish & Corran of Ardgour, Duror and Glencoe in Lismore & Appin, Kilmallie, Morvern and The Small Isles.

The other Argyll Parishes (and those not transferred to Inverness) are in Argyll & Bute with its archive in Lochgilphead
Hope this is helpful to researchers.

Apparently, there is a possible move to close the Lochaber depository of the Argyll archives and there is some concern from historians:
